In the beginning

The path to becoming an independent transmission system operator

2016

On 1. January 2016, Nowega GmbH took on part of the pipeline network and the central process network of Erdgas Münster (EGM). Nowega's network was expanded by these parts of EGM's upstream pipeline network to a total of about 1,500 km of high-pressure gas lines. The expansion of the network also meant more work: our number of employees went up to about 60.

2013

With the appointment of a compliance officer on 22. August 2013 we fulfilled the final criterion of the certification procedure.

2012

As of 1. January 2012, ownership of the gas transmission network was transferred from Erdgas Münster to Erdgas Münster Transport. On 24. February 2012, Erdgas Münster Transport GmbH & Co. KG was restructured and changed its legal name to Nowega GmbH. This was an important step towards the certification of Nowega GmbH as an independent transmission system operator (ITSO) under the German Energy Industry Act (Energiewirtschaftsgesetz, EnWG) As one of the first transmission system operators in Germany, Nowega was awarded the certification as ITSO by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur, BNetzA) for the unbundling of all required areas in accordance with the legal requirements on 9. November 2012. A few minor requirements still needed to be fulfilled.

2011

The EnWG Amendment that translated the Third Energy Package of the EU, regulating the internal gas and energy market, into national law took effect on 4. August 2011.

As of 1 October 2011, the L-Gas 1 and GASPOOL market areas become a new, common, quality-spanning market area with the name GASPOOL. Prior to, and in preparation of this merger, the two market area companies responsible for the areas are combined into one in August, 2011 taking on the name GASPOOL Balancing Services GmbH.

The new company name "Nowega" is created as part of an internal creative process involving all of EGMT's employees. The claim "We Transport Gas." is adopted to show and reference the company's clearly laid out areas of responsibility.

2009

On 1. April 2009, EWE Netz GmbH, Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services GmbH and EGMT combined their market areas into a single area called "L-gas 1". Bremen-based Aequamus GmbH took on the role of the responsilbe operator for the market area.

The Third Energy Package for the internal gas and energy market was adopted by the European Council on 25. June 2009. It came into force on 3. September 2009. It contained even stricter rules on the separation of gas trading and the operation of transmission networks. The deadline for the provisions to come into full force and their translation into national law in the member states was 3. March 2011.

2007

The European Commission introduced the Third Energy Package for the first time, setting the course for the continued liberalisation of the European energy markets and the separation of the different market functions within vertically integrated energy companies.

2005

On 1. September 2005, Erdgas Münster founded an independent company for handling the transmission business under the name
Erdgas Münster Transport GmbH & Co. KG (EGMT). It did so to comply with the requirements of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG), which mandated a separation of the sales and network operation activities within vertically integrated energy utilities.

1959

Following the discovery of natural gas in northern Germany in the first half of the 20th century, natural gas producers were looking for solutions to process and market the gas sourced from the regionally dispersed gas fields. The transmission of gas to the customers or consumers required large investments, e.g. for the construction of pipelines. Against this backdrop, Erdgas Münster was founded on 11. August 1959 under the name "Erdgas-Verkaufs-Gesellschaft mBH" and registered in the company register on 25. September 1959.

Its founding shareholders were: C. Deilmann Bergbau G.m.b.H., Gewerkschaft Elwerath Erdölwerke, Preußische Bergwerks- und Hütten-Aktiengesellschaft (Preussag) and Wintershall Aktiengesellschaft.
